Manufacturing, Engineering Tops in Top Echelon for 2013

At the beginning of every year, we at Top Echelon publish statistics relevant to recruiting about trends within Top Echelon Network.  These statistics include the percentage of candidates, job orders, and placements in all of the Network’s major disciplines.

Just about every year, the discipline in which Network recruiters make the most placements is Industry and Manufacturing.  While that was also the case again in 2013 (see chart below), there were some other interesting developments.

In 2012, IT/Information Systems/Data Processing closed the gap in terms of the number of placements made within that discipline in the Network.  At the time, it was conceivable that IT might eventually overtake Manufacturing.

It didn’t happen.

Instead, the Engineering discipline made a major move in 2013.  Whereas Industry and Manufacturing accounted for 32.0% of all placements made in the Network during the year, Engineering was second at 22.3% and IT finished third at 16.3%Sales and Marketing was also in double digits as far as placements were concerned at 10.2%.

If you work in one of these disciplines, what’s been your experience?  Is demand high and is there a sense of urgency on the part of clients to fill open positions?  Is it difficult to find candidates who are qualified enough?
