It’s safe to say that anybody looking for a job is on LinkedIn, and that includes passive candidates who are waiting for the right opportunity to come along before making a change in the name of career advancement.
These candidates—passive or otherwise—all have LinkedIn profiles that are full of words designed to grab attention and convince visitors of their knowledge, experience, and expertise. However, which words belong there . . . and which ones do not?
Luckily, the answer to that question is available!
LinkedIn recently released its annual list of “The Top 10 Overused Buzzwords” on the social media site. In this case, “overused buzzwords” are words that contribute practically nothing in the way of value to the user’s LinkedIn profile.
Below is this year’s list of those words:
- Creative
- Organizational
- Effective
- Motivated
- Extensive experience
- Track record
- Innovative
- Responsible
- Analytical
- Problem solving
Candidates who have these words on their LinkedIn profile (and their resume, as well) are probably doing themselves a disservice. They’re quite possibly doing the recruiter with whom they’re working a disservice, as well.

What are your thoughts on these words? Are they, indeed, overused? Are their other words that deserve to be on this list?
