Is recruitment a sales profession? You’d better believe it is! After all, recruiting is the only sales profession where there are people on both ends of the sale. That means potentially twice the number of objections.
After all, a toaster never complains at the last minute that it doesn’t want to be sold. But a candidate can say at the last minute that they don’t want to be placed. And when that happens, it can be particularly discouraging, even for the most battle-tested of search consultants.
So, just like in other sales professions, some recruiters are better at sales than other recruiters. In other words, they’re better salespeople in terms of what must be done on a recruiting desk on a daily basis. After all, recruiting involves the power of persuasion, especially in terms of candidates. That power is needed in at least three situations:
- The recruiter must convince a candidate to consider their client’s employment opportunity.
- After convincing the candidate to consider the opportunity, the recruiter must now convince them to join the interviewing and hiring process.
- After convince the candidate to both consider the opportunity and join the interviewing and hiring process, the recruiter may have to convince the candidate to accept their client’s offer of employment.
There are, of course, sales considerations in the client side, as well. This is the case when a recruiter or search consultant is attempting to convince a prospective client to become an actual client. Then the recruiter must convince their new client to give them a job order. And then convince them to consider the candidates that they present for that job order.
The persuading (and the sales) never ends!
It might go without saying, but we’re going to say it, anyway: those recruiters who are better at sales are usually more successful than those recruiters who are not. This is why recruitment sales training courses are so important. They help recruiters become better salespeople, which, ironically, helps them become better recruiters. Crazy how it works, huh?
The good news is that Top Echelon offers recruitment sales training courses as part of its Recruiter Coaching Series of free webinars. These courses possess the important dual characteristics of being both online and free.
